First and foremost, congratulations on your wise decision to ride with the Perineum Falcons. You will probably not regret it.
The following information has been compiled to help guide you through your virgin RAGBRAI experience with the Perineum Falcons. You may contact us with any specific questions here.
2012 Overnight Towns Announced!
The Virgin’s Guide to Packing for RAGBRAI
Departure:
Departure information for RAGBRAI XL is still yet to be determined.
The Route:
Here is a link to the route maps. You can print out each daily map by right-clicking it. These are handy to carry with you each day so you know where the route is and how much mileage you have left.
Support:
The bus will stop in one or more pass-through towns before getting to the overnight town for support. The bus will typically arrive in the overnight town for camp setup (individually responsible for tent setup) between 5 and 8pm.
If there are special needs to be in a specific town earlier, we will try to accommodate. In most overnight towns we will have camp sites predetermined and give out addresses and maps beforehand. In the towns that we don’t, we will get into town a bit earlier, establish a site and leave the address and directions at the information board in town.
We will also try to maintain contact with the riders via cell phone. Text messaging works best with all the tower traffic.
SCHEDULES ON RAGBRAI ARE LIKE TITS ON A BOAR: PRETTY MUCH USELESS. However, we will do our best to be there for everyone and we will not leave riders behind.
Showers:
We have solar bag showers and a shower enclosure which perfectly fits yourself and a horny local.
Overnight Hosts:
You will be supplied with maps/addresses/phone numbers/names of our overnight hosts and hookups. This is how you will find the bus most nights. If there is no pre-arranged spot, we will communicate the camp site location via phone, text or the information board in each town.
Our overnight hosts will kindly be providing yard space to camp and possibly bathrooms and showers. Respect these people and their property.
Gear Storage:
The Perineum Falcons are not personally responsible for the security of your equipment. Although we will try to protect your equipment and bikes, the ride and transportation on top of the bus can be somewhat rough on them. Bikes will be fastened to the rack and railing on top of the bus with bungees. We can’t guarantee your bike won’t get scratches, etc. Therefore, bring your touring bike rather than your $5000 racing bike. Same goes for you and your personal stuff. Some with more expensive, newer bikes have requested front hub mounts, of which there are a handful on the deck. These people will be given priority for the mounts, but will have to enforce their reservations themselves.
It’s not that it will be an overly unsafe environment, but it’s not “ideal” either. We’ll do our best to protect your stuff.
DOING IT: You haven’t done it until you’ve done it with a strange townie on the P. Falcon.
IMPORTANT:
The bus is classified as an RV and is insured accordingly. An RV classification and the fact that the driver and owners are not compensated monetarily mean that a CDL is not required to drive the bus. THIS MEANS THAT IF ASKED, NO ONE CONTRIBUTED A PENNY TO THE RIDE, THE SUPPLIES, THE DRIVER OR EVEN A DOLLAR FOR GASOLINE FOR THE TRIP. It is unlikely that we would be confronted on this issue. However, please know that if fines are incurred for improper insurance or licensure because you said you gave money for the bus or gas, we will come looking for you. Officially, we are just a bunch of friends having a good time in an RV.
